The Challenge

The client operated over 200 refrigerated storage units across multiple facilities with no centralized, real-time visibility into temperature excursions. Existing data loggers required manual retrieval, meaning spoilage events were discovered hours or days after they occurred — well after the product was unrecoverable.

They needed a wireless sensor network that could report temperature and humidity in near real time across large facility footprints, without running new cabling through existing cold-storage infrastructure.

Our Solution

We designed a battery-powered LoRaWAN sensor node around an STM32L4 ultra-low-power microcontroller paired with a calibrated digital temperature/humidity sensor, engineered for a 5+ year battery life on a single coin cell. Enclosure and antenna placement were validated for reliable propagation through cold-storage steel structures.

On the infrastructure side, we built a custom 8-channel LoRaWAN gateway with industrial Ethernet backhaul, deployed centrally per facility, and integrated the full network into AWS IoT Core via MQTT for real-time dashboarding and threshold-based alerting.

The Result

The deployed network now covers all monitored storage units with sub-2-minute alert latency on temperature excursions, replacing a manual audit process that previously took a full day per facility. Sensor nodes have run over 18 months in the field on original battery charge, validating the power budget engineering.

“We went from discovering spoilage events a day later to getting an alert within two minutes. The Autoematio team didn't just build the sensor node — they understood our entire operational problem before writing a single line of firmware.”
