The Challenge

The client's AMR platform needed a motor controller capable of smooth, precise torque control at low speeds for tight warehouse maneuvering, but off-the-shelf controllers were either too large for their chassis or lacked the CAN-based fleet integration their control system required.

Our Solution

We designed a compact FOC (field-oriented control) BLDC motor controller board built around an STM32G4 with hardware FOC acceleration, integrated current-sense feedback and a CAN interface for direct integration into the robot's existing fleet control bus. The layout prioritized thermal dissipation for continuous-duty warehouse operation within a tight form factor.

Firmware included closed-loop velocity and torque control modes, stall detection, and a CAN-based command/telemetry protocol matched to the client's existing fleet management software.

The Result

The controller enabled smoother low-speed maneuvering than the client's previous off-the-shelf solution, with a 40% reduction in board footprint that allowed the drive assembly to fit their next-generation chassis design. The board has since been integrated across the client's full AMR fleet.

“Most vendors would have just handed us a bigger board. Autoematio redesigned the control loop and the layout together and got us a 40% smaller footprint that actually fit our next chassis revision.”
